A fast, idiomatic Spanish all its own

Chilean Spanish

Real Chilean Spanish — fast, informal, and packed with expressions you will not find in any Spanish textbook.

1 real reel

Chilean Spanish has a reputation among learners — and among Spanish speakers from other countries — as one of the harder varieties to follow. Speech tends to be fast, consonants at the ends of syllables often reduce or drop, and everyday vocabulary is full of chilenismos: idioms, expressions, and slang that are specific to Chile and rarely appear in textbook material. Informal speech uses the voseo mixed with tuteo in ways that other varieties do not, and question intonation can be quite distinctive. On this page you hear real Chilean speakers in everyday contexts. Plan to replay clips more than once, especially early on — Chilean Spanish rewards persistence. If you already understand Mexican or Colombian Spanish comfortably, Chilean is a good stretch: a few hours of real exposure moves your ear significantly.
