Indian English is spoken by well over 100 million people across India and the global Indian diaspora — making it one of the largest English-speaking communities in the world, and a fully developed standard variety in its own right. The rhythm is syllable-timed rather than stress-timed (every syllable gets roughly equal weight), which immediately distinguishes it from the stress-driven flow of American or British speech. Consonants like t and d are often retroflex (the tongue curled back), and intonation patterns track Indian languages rather than British or American ones. You'll hear distinctive grammatical patterns: the universal isn't it? tag, present continuous in places other varieties wouldn't use it (I am understanding), and emphasis particles like only and itself. Variation across states is enormous. Register often skews more formal than American or British casual speech.
