Nigerian English
Real videos of real people from Nigeria. Hear how they talk and the words they use.
Nigerian English is spoken by more than 100 million people in Nigeria and around the world. It may be the biggest group that speaks English anywhere. It sounds different from American or British English: every part of a word gets about the same weight, so words like office and computer keep their full sound. Nigerian English is also shaped by other languages spoken in Nigeria, like Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa. Many people also speak Nigerian Pidgin, sometimes called Naija. Nigerian English has its own special words, like gist (friendly talk or news) and wahala (trouble). You can hear it in Nollywood movies and in songs by artists like Burna Boy and Davido.
