Spanish from the Andes

Andean Spanish (Español andino)

Real Andean Spanish from Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and the mountains of Colombia. Quechua and Aymara, two other languages, shape some of its words and sound.

Andean Spanish is spoken in the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and parts of Colombia and Argentina. People here have spoken Quechua and Aymara for a long time, and both languages shape the Spanish of the Andes: in words, in some sentences, and in the sound. People talk slower than in Caribbean Spanish. People say sounds more clearly than in fast Caribbean talk. The beat has its own shape too. On this page, you hear real Andean people talk in daily life. If Caribbean Spanish feels too fast for you, or Rioplatense feels too different, Andean Spanish can be a good middle step. It is clear enough to follow with practice, and different enough to grow your ear past the Spanish you learned in books.
