네덜란드어 표현 “helemaal niet”, 무슨 뜻인가요?

Helemaal means "entirely" or "completely"; combined with niet (not), it produces the strongest everyday Dutch negation: "not at all." Dutch speakers reach for helemaal niet when a flat nee won't do — when they want to deny a claim emphatically, when they want to reassure someone that a worry is unfounded, or when they want to push back on a misreading.

The phrase pairs naturally with hoor: helemaal niet hoor combines emphatic negation with reassuring softener — meaning roughly "no, no, not at all, don't worry." Dutch parents use this combo to calm anxious kids; Dutch friends use it to deflect compliments ("not at all, you're being too kind") or to wave away apologies ("not at all, no problem").

A pragmatic note: helemaal niet sits at one end of Dutch negation intensity. The scale runs from toch niet (gentle disagreement) → niet echt (not really) → helemaal niet (not at all) → absoluut niet (absolutely not). Each step is more emphatic.
