Chinese listening speed

120-160 words a minute

Medium speed Chinese

Real Chinese at normal speed. Taiwan and mainland China say words in different ways. Small words add extra meaning too.

When people talk at a normal speed, you can hear real differences between Taiwan and China. In Taiwan, some sounds are softer. Some words are different too: 土豆 means peanut in Taiwan, but potato in China. In Taiwan, people often add small words at the end of a sentence, like 啦, 嘛, 喔, 耶. In fast, easy talk, people often drop 的, join tones together, and add English words like OK without slowing down. High school interviews, simple talks, and short Taiwan videos are good practice here, because you can also see what people mean. This speed is close to HSK 4 and 5 listening tests, so practice here also helps you get ready for the test.
