English grammar
Reported Speech
Reported speech means telling what someone said, but with different words. "I" can become "she". "Now" can become "then".
Class Reported Speech
These are the forms taught in English classes all over the world. We show them with real videos, not made-up ones.
Reported Statements
Subject + said (that) + reported clause
"She said she was going to go home." Reported statements say again what someone said, in new words. "I" can become "she". Words about time can change too.
Reported Questions
Subject + asked + if/whether / wh-word + reported clause
"He asked whether she was coming." Reported questions look like a normal sentence. There is no question mark. Many people find this hard to learn.
Reported Commands & Requests
Subject + told/asked + object + to + base verb
"She told him to wait." Reported commands use "to" and an action word. We don't say the same words as before.
