荷兰语短语

“nou nee”在荷兰语里是什么意思?

A Dutch soft refusal — "well, no" — hedging the negative answer.

它是什么意思

Nou nee is the inverse of nou ja — same hedging nou, but landing on a negative. Where nou ja hedges before agreeing, nou nee hedges before refusing. The phrase signals "I've thought about it for a beat, and the answer is no." Dutch speakers reach for it when they want to reject a suggestion politely, when they're skeptical of a claim, or when they're disappointing someone gently.

The phrase is the conversational tool for slow-no. A Dutch speaker who says nou nee before a refusal is signaling consideration: they didn't immediately reject the idea, they thought about it. This is socially valuable — a flat nee can feel dismissive; nou nee shows the speaker took the suggestion seriously.

A second use: skeptical interruption. When someone asserts something the listener doesn't quite buy, nou nee expresses doubt without confrontation. The phrase is a quieter cousin of nee joh (no, come on) or echt niet (definitely not).
