API terms & pricing

Last updated May 2026

This page covers how partners can use the Reelang APIs (vocab, video discovery, embed player), what we expect in return, and what it costs. Written like humans, for humans, consumable by the machines. ;) If anything is unclear, email us and we’ll explain. These terms sit on top of the general Reelang terms.

Who this is for

Apps, products and services that want to look up real native-speaker videos by phrase, pull graded videos into a learner-facing surface, or embed the Reelang player. Our partners are language-learning apps, tutoring platforms, flashcard tools and creator products.

If you’re an individual developer, hobbyist or researcher, the launch-partner plan below is built for you too. Just tell us what you’re building.

API-specific questions or issues: reply to [email protected]. That mailbox goes straight to the team running the API.

Above 100k lookups, white-label or no Reelang branding, continuous offline access, dedicated SLA.

A “lookup” is one successful API request returning one or more videos. We don’t bill failed requests or empty results. All tiers below the white-label one show the Reelang embed player with a modest logo mark in the corner. The easiest way to see what it looks like is to grab a key on the launch-partner plan and drop the embed into a page.

Dev plan (free, self-serve)

Before you commit to anything, we want you to be able to try the API. The Dev plan gives you 500 lookups, total (not per month). No call, no sales conversation, no pressure to upgrade. Grab a key, point it at our endpoints, and see if the data actually fits what you’re building.

When you run out of Dev lookups, the natural next step is the launch-partner plan below. Or stay on Dev and come back another day. We’re fine either way.

Launch-partner plan (free)

While we’re building out the API, we’d rather have great partners using it for free than chase revenue from a small handful. The launch-partner plan is how we make that concrete.

What you get. Up to 5,000 lookups per month, free, for 6 months. If you’re not yet at a volume that makes a paid plan obvious, we’ll extend it. You also get direct access to us for integration help.

What we ask in return. Use the Reelang embed player. It shows a modest Reelang logo mark in the corner. No wordmark, no overlay, no banner. The fastest way to see exactly what it looks like is to grab a key and drop the embed into a page. Let us list your logo on our API page so prospective partners can see who else is building on top of Reelang, and if it performs well in your product, let us use a short quote or screenshot in our marketing. That’s it.

Once you’re in production. While you’re on the launch-partner plan, add a small Reelang logo on the relevant page of your marketing site, linking back to us. We’ll do the same: your logo on our API page links to your site. It’s a mutual link that helps both sides. Your learners discover us, our developers discover you, and we all show up better in search.

After the launch period. You roll into one of the paid plans below at whichever tier fits your volume. No auto-charge surprises. We’ll email you before anything changes.

Paid plans

Starter, $49 / month. Up to 25,000 lookups per month. Same data, same player, same support channel as the launch-partner plan. For apps with steady but moderate usage.

Growth, $99 / month. Up to 100,000 lookups per month. For products where the API is part of the core experience and runs at meaningful volume.

Scale, custom. Above 100,000 lookups, or if you need a dedicated rate-limit ceiling, latency guarantees, or a contract. Talk to us and we’ll quote you.

White-label, no-attribution and raw-data plans

The plans above all show the Reelang embed player with a modest logo mark in the corner. Try-before-you-buy on the launch-partner plan will show you exactly what we mean. That light bit of branding is what funds the free tier and keeps the paid plans affordable.

If you need to remove the logo mark entirely, ship a fully white-labelled player, or pull raw video metadata into your own stack without surfacing the source, that’s a different product. White-label / raw-data plans start at $299 / month and are quoted based on volume, scope, and how the data ends up being used. Email us and we’ll work it out.

What you can do with the data

Use it inside your product to help your learners. Embed our player, surface videos, score them against learner profiles, build flashcards on top of them, rank them in your feed. Build the things the API page describes, and the things we haven’t thought of yet.

A quick word on the spirit of this. Building this catalogue takes a lot of hours, dedication, infrastructure and hard cash to fund the company: scouts finding the right creators, scoring every clip for CEFR and speed, keeping it all fresh as the source platforms move. We’re very happy to power language-learning apps and tools that serve every kind of learner, with a sprinkle of real native-speaker video to make the experience more engaging. That’s exactly what the API is for.

What we’d rather not see is the API used as a shortcut to clone or compete with what we’ve built. So please don’t resell the raw data to third parties, republish bulk dumps of our catalogue, or use lookups to build a competing index of native-speaker videos. If you’re unsure whether something counts, ask first and we’ll be straight with you.

Query live, please don’t cache

We ask partners to hit the API at the moment a learner asks for a phrase or video, not from a pre-built cache. Two reasons.

Fresh content. We’re adding videos every day, especially in the long-tail languages. A cached result from last week is already missing the best clips we indexed since. Live lookups mean your learners always see the latest real-world examples.

Better content for everyone. Live queries tell us which phrases, topics and CEFR levels learners are actually asking for in production. That signal is what drives our sourcing: the things we see asked for most are the things we go and find more videos for next. Cached traffic gives us nothing, and your learners get a weaker pool over time as a result.

Short request-deduping inside a single learner session is fine (don’t hit us five times for the same word in the same minute). Persistent caching across sessions or users isn’t. If you have a use case that genuinely needs offline data, talk to us first.

Rate limits and fair use

Each plan has a monthly lookup ceiling and a per-second rate limit sized for that tier. If you hit the ceiling, requests return a clear 429 and we’ll email you so you can decide whether to upgrade or wait out the cycle. We don’t silently throttle without telling you.

If you’re going to run a one-off backfill or a burst that’s well above your normal pattern, let us know in advance and we’ll lift the ceiling for the window.

Creators come first

The whole point of Reelang is that creators keep the views, the credit and the link back. That carries through the API: every video object includes the creator’s handle, the source platform, and the original URL. You agree to keep those visible wherever the video is shown.

If a creator asks for a video to be removed, we pull it from the catalogue. Because lookups are live (see above), the removal flows through to your product the next time a learner asks for that phrase.

Changes to the API

We’ll add fields, add endpoints, and tune the data over time. Additive changes won’t break your integration. If we ever need to make a breaking change, we’ll version the endpoint and give you at least 90 days’ notice before the old version goes away.

Pricing for existing paid plans is stable: we won’t raise your rate during a billing year without telling you 60 days ahead.

Service levels (what we promise and don’t)

We work hard to keep the API up and fast. On paid plans, we’ll respond to integration questions within one business day, and to anything that’s actually broken within a few hours during business hours.

That said, the launch-partner and Starter / Growth plans are best-effort. We don’t commit to a contractual uptime SLA at those tiers. If your product depends on the API in a way that needs guaranteed uptime, that’s a Scale plan.

Ending things

You can cancel any time. We’ll keep your access live until the end of the current billing period.

We can suspend or end access if someone is abusing the API, ignoring the creator-attribution rules above, or running a use case the plan doesn’t cover. Where possible, we’ll flag it and give you a chance to fix it first.

The usual disclaimers

The API is provided “as is.” We do our best to keep the catalogue accurate, but videos can disappear from the source platform, creators can ask for removal, and difficulty scoring is a model, not a measurement. Build for graceful failure.

To the extent allowed by law, our total liability for any claim related to the API is capped at what you’ve paid us in the previous twelve months (or $50 on the free tier). No indirect or consequential damages.
