Who is Dieuwertje Blok and why is she on TV every December?
Muzikale ode aan Dieuwertje Blok in Limburgse sfeer
A2 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Picked for people who know a little
Dieuwertje Blok has been the calm, motherly face of Het Sinterklaasjournaal since 2003. The daily kids' news show runs every November and December, and by Dutch viewing-share it’s the country’s true national broadcast. She’s the one Dutch children grow up associating with the season, more than any specific Sinterklaas actor on screen. Limburgs is the southern-province dialect, with rolled R’s and Italianate vowels; tributes to Blok rendered in Limburgse sfeer are an annual sub-genre on Dutch primetime.
In this RTL Tonight clip, the host hands over to a Limburgish musical-tribute moment: “Jacques, aan jou de eer.” Limburgs takes it from there.
