What does “regarder d’un autre œil” mean in French?

When the same old thing suddenly feels new, French says you “regardez quelque chose d’un autre œil” — you look at it “with another eye.” This does not mean a second eye. It means your view has changed. You now see the thing in a new way, with new feelings or new understanding. It works for places, people, or even a simple glass of water.

At the end of the video, the host says you will now “regarderez vos verres d’eau d’un autre œil juste avant de les boire” — “you will look at your glasses of water in a new way, just before you drink them.” After learning that your water may hold molecules once drunk by Julius Caesar, a plain glass feels very different. That is the whole point of the idiom. The word “œil” means “eye.” Here it stands for your point of view, not the body part. You can also use the verb voir: “voir les choses d’un autre œil” means the same thing.
