A2 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Curated for beginners
The KNVB Beker is the Netherlands' national football cup, an annual single-elimination tournament that runs in parallel with the Eredivisie league. Founded in 1898, the cup gives lower-division and amateur clubs a shot at facing the Dutch giants (Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, AZ). Winning the Beker automatically qualifies a club for European football. The final is traditionally played at De Kuip in Rotterdam, and bekerfinaledag is its own minor public holiday in Dutch football fandom, complete with city-wide parades when smaller clubs win.
In this clip, Alkmaar celebrates AZ’s cup win: “AZ heeft namelijk de bekerfinale gewonnen. Blije mensen in Alkmaar.”
