What does “j’avoue” mean in French?

j’avoue
French agreement marker
“true,” “fair enough” — agreement, not really a confession

Avouer means to confess or admit, so j’avoue ought to mean “I admit it” — and it still can. But on its own, especially among younger speakers, it has thinned into a plain marker of agreement: someone makes a point, you say j’avoue, and it lands as “true”, “fair enough”, “same”. Treat the bare one-word version as yes, and keep the full construction when you really are owning up: j’avoue que j’ai oublié.

The Académie française has objected to exactly this drift, warning that using j’avoue as a bare oui hollows the verb out. The objection has changed nothing — it is one of the most common agreement tokens in casual speech.
