What is a Dutch “binnenvaartschip”?
Een dag meevaren op een binnenvaartschip
A2 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Picked for people who know a little
A binnenvaartschip is a Dutch inland-shipping vessel built to haul cargo (containers, sand, gravel, grain, fuel) along the country’s dense network of rivers, canals, and hoofdvaarwegen. The Netherlands runs the largest inland-shipping fleet in the EU, with thousands of binnenvaartschepen moving freight that would otherwise go by truck. Many vessels are owner-operated and double as floating homes for the captain’s family, who live on board in a roef (the cabin section). It’s a uniquely Dutch profession with multi-generation skipper families.
In this clip, a Dutch presenter visits a binnenvaartschip and explains the household rules: “Op deze plek moet je je schoenen altijd uitdoen.” The reveal: “En het goede antwoord is een binnenvaartschip.”
