desarmador
Mexican word for screwdriver
“screwdriver” in Mexico; Spain says destornillador

A screwdriver has different names across the Spanish-speaking world. In Mexico the common word is desarmador, while Spain and many other countries say destornillador. Desarmador comes from desarmar, “to take apart,” because you use the tool to take screws out. If you say desarmador in Spain it may not be understood, so it is a useful word to match to the right region.

The clip is a Mexican tool list and opens with el desarmador, then el serrucho (handsaw), el taladro (drill), and la pala (shovel). Both desarmador and destornillador are heard in central Mexico, but desarmador is the more typical Mexican choice.
