What is a Dutch “stroopwafel”?
A stroopwafel is the Netherlands' national cookie: two thin rounds of waffle batter pressed flat and filled with a layer of warm caramel syrup. Invented in Gouda around 1810, the cookie was originally made from bakery scraps and quickly became a cheap working-class treat. The traditional way to eat one is to balance it on top of a hot tea or coffee cup; the steam softens the stroop and the cookie warms through. Dutch supermarkets stock several brands (Daelman’s, Verkade, Albert Heijn private label), but Dutch markets (especially Gouda’s Stroopwafelmarkt) still sell the freshly-baked version that beats anything packaged.
