💡 Did you know?
canneberge
Quebec French noun
“Cranberry,” from a Mi’kmaq-rooted regional word, the Quebec form France replaced with English-borrowed cranberry

Canneberge is the Quebec word for cranberry. The fruit is native to North America, so when European French settlers met it they coined a French name (likely calqued from a regional word for the same berry). Continental France mostly says cranberry now, lifted straight from English. Quebec held the older French form, the way it held fin de semaine over weekend and courriel over email.

In this clip, host Eric Arnaud visits Laurierville in Centre-du-Québec, where the Lemoine family runs Fruits d’Or, the largest organic canneberge producer on Earth. Quebec’s bogs feed roughly 30% of global cranberry supply, exports rose 400% in a decade, and most of that crop ships out frozen.
