What does “ruilen” mean in Dutch, and how is it different from “kopen”?

Ruilen means “to swap” or “to trade” — handing something over to get something else back, no money changing hands. With Panini stickers you cannot simply buy the ones you need: packets are random, so ruilen met anderen, trading with other collectors, is the only way to fill the gaps. The verb is common well beyond stickers — for swapping seats, shifts, or old habits.
The noun ruil gives ruilhandel, “barter,” the oldest form of trade, and the set phrase in ruil voor means “in exchange for.” The clip’s own line nails the mechanic: “je weet niet welke stickers je zal krijgen, en dus moet je ruilen met anderen” — you don’t know which stickers you’ll get, so you have to trade with others.
