💡 Did you know?
chimarrão
Brazilian Portuguese regional tradition
hot, bitter mate tea from southern Brazil

Chimarrão is southern Brazil’s version of mate. Ground erva-mate goes into a gourd called a cuia, gets topped up with hot water, and is sipped through a metal straw called a bomba. It’s strong and bitter, and it’s meant to be shared: one gourd goes around the group. In Rio Grande do Sul it’s part of local identity.

So the hint você gosta muito de chimarrão, né? (“you really like chimarrão, right?”) points straight to Rio Grande do Sul, and the game keeps circling back there. The cold version, tereré, is popular in Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraguay. The same clip mentions acarajé (Bahia) and Minas Gerais: in Brazil, food and region go together.
