ruin bars
Hungarian *romkocsma*
Budapest’s signature bars, built inside abandoned old buildings since the early 2000s

Budapest has a special kind of bar called a ruin bar (in Hungarian, romkocsma, “ruin pub”). These bars opened in the early 2000s in the old Jewish Quarter (District VII), inside abandoned buildings, courtyards, and apartment blocks left empty after World War II. The first famous one, Szimpla Kert, opened in 2004 and is still going strong. Each ruin bar has its own mismatched furniture, plants growing through walls, art on every surface, and live music in summer.

In this clip, an Indian travel YouTuber visits Budapest and tells viewers, “Don’t miss going to Szimpla Kert. It’s literally the coolest bar in Europe.” He also shares prices in rupees, helpful for Indian travelers planning a trip.
