What does “kabei” mean in Esperanto?

In a personal update, this creator reassures her viewers directly: “Mi ne kabeas. Mi ne forlasas Esperantujon” — “I’m not kabei-ing. I’m not leaving Esperanto-land.” Kabei means to drop out of the Esperanto movement abruptly and without explanation. It’s named after Kabe, the pen name of Kazimierz Bein, an early, prolific Esperantist and dictionary-maker who vanished from the movement in 1911 with no announced reason.

Bein wasn’t obscure — he produced one of the earliest Esperanto dictionaries and translated major literary works into the language, which is exactly why his sudden, silent exit stung enough to become a verb. In 1931 he finally said he’d come to doubt Esperanto could ever work as a true international language — a rare on-record explanation for a word usually defined by the absence of one.
