Volendamse klederdracht (kiekje)
noun · costume tradition
The traditional Volendam fishing-village costume — and the photo-studio kiekje every visitor takes home

Volendam is the former fishing village 20 km north of Amsterdam where every visiting tourist (and many Dutch families) ends up in front of a photo-studio backdrop wearing klederdracht: the traditional black-bodice-and-white-cap costume of the Zuiderzee fishing communities. The studios charge around €30, hand you the outfit, and shoot a kiekje (Dutch slang for snapshot, from the click-sound of an old shutter). The town leans into its identity around clogs, smoked eel, and accordion bands. The village of Marken across the bay does the same with a different costume.

In this KRO-NCRV clip, a host narrates a family photo session: “Geen enkel gezin verlaat Volendam zonder kiekje in klederdracht.”
