💡 Did you know?
висит / вешают (visit / veshayut)
Russian position-verb pair
“is hanging” (where it is) vs. “hang up” (putting it there)

Russian splits English “hang” in two. Висеть describes where something already is: одежда висит на вешалке, “the clothes are hanging on the hanger.” Вешать is the action of putting it there: одежду вешают на вешалку, “you hang clothes on a hanger.” One is a state, the other a movement, and mixing them up sounds odd to Russians.

Russian likes to say how things are located: рейл стоит (the rack “stands”), одежда висит (hangs), книга лежит (lies). Each state has an action partner: стоять / ставить, лежать / класть, висеть / вешать. Вешалка itself, the hanger, comes from вешать.
