What does “verbesserungswürdig” mean in German?
The cake is a mess — the cream barely worked, the jam ran off, there’s a big gap. But instead of saying “this is bad,” the speaker says “Es ist verbesserungswürdig.” It’s a calm, polite way to admit something isn’t good yet and still needs work. Germans use this word when they want to be honest about a problem without sounding harsh — a gentle “could be better.”
In the clip: “Es ist verbesserungswürdig.” — “It could be better / it needs some work.” The word is built from “Verbesserung” (improvement) plus “-würdig” (worth), so literally “worth improving.” It softens criticism. More examples: “Dein Deutsch ist gut, aber die Aussprache ist noch verbesserungswürdig.” (Your German is good, but the pronunciation still needs work.) “Der Service im Hotel war verbesserungswürdig.” (The hotel service was not great.) “Das Ergebnis ist verbesserungswürdig.” (The result could be better.) You’ll mostly hear it in polite, slightly formal feedback — at work, in reviews, or when someone wants to be honest but kind.
