Adivinhando se é menino ou menina
A2 Portuguese listening practice · Brazilian Portuguese · Curated for beginners
Ué is a tiny Brazilian interjection that says “wait, what? that’s odd.” You use it when something surprises you or when the answer seems obvious to you, and it can carry a hint of playful confusion. It is very informal and mostly spoken, so you will hear it constantly in casual talk and rarely see it in formal writing.
In the guessing game, one of the players says “Ué, lógico, é um ou outro”: “Well, obviously, it’s one or the other,” puzzled that anyone would find the question hard. Notice how ué goes at the start, followed by a comma-like pause. You can also stretch it, uuué, when you are really confused. It is a great early word because it is short and needs no grammar.
