What is the Dutch “Schijf van Vijf”?
Nieuwe schijf van vijf: minder vlees, meer peulvruchten
A2 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Picked for people who know a little
The Schijf van Vijf (“Disc of Five”) is the Netherlands' national food-and-nutrition guide, published and updated by the Voedingscentrum (the Dutch government nutrition advisory). It groups daily-recommended foods into five segments: vegetables and fruit, grains, dairy/protein, fats and oils, and water. Dutch primary schools, supermarkets, and parenting writing use the Schijf van Vijf as their reference plate. The 2025 update notably reduced recommended meat portions and increased peulvruchten (legumes), reflecting Dutch dietary-guideline shifts toward plant-protein.
In this clip, kids quiz themselves on what’s in the new Schijf van Vijf: “Er is een nieuwe Schijf van 5. Daarin staat wat je het beste kan eten.”
