een nieuwe stap zetten
phrase · soap grammar
“Take a new step” — the Belgian/Dutch soap shorthand for moving in together

Flanders has two never-ending soaps, watched in tandem by half the country: *Familie (VTM, since 1991) and Thuis (Eén, since 1995). Both run nightly, both follow extended families through ordinary-and-overheated drama, and both have outlived multiple generations of cast. Familie is the older and slightly trashier; Thuis the slightly more public-broadcaster-prestige one. Together they form the spine of Flemish prime-time, and a “nieuwe stap*” in a relationship is the standard soap-grammar for moving in together.

In this VTM clip, Guido stumbles through asking that exact question: “We kennen elkaar al een tijdje... Een nieuwe stap voor onze relatie.”
