💡 Did you know?

What does روج (rūj) mean in Arabic?

روج (rūj)
Arabic beauty loanword from French
lipstick; from French “rouge” (red) — the everyday colloquial word over the formal أحمر الشفاه

The formal Arabic for lipstick is أحمر الشفاه (ahmar al-shifah), literally “red of the lips” — but in everyday speech, Arabic reached straight into French and borrowed rouge. The result is روج (rūj): shorter, snappier, and now far more common in Egyptian and Gulf colloquial Arabic than its formal equivalent. It belongs to a whole wave of French beauty terms — ماكياج (maquillage), كونسيلر (concealer) — that entered Arabic via 20th-century salon culture and never left.

In the clip, after frantically redoing her makeup before a surprise suitor visit, the girl pulls a روج from her bag as the final touch: طلعت روج من الشنطه وبمجرد ما حطته شفايفها بقت ناعمه ولماعه وطبيعيه — “she took out a روج from her bag, and the moment she put it on her lips they became soft, shiny and natural.” It’s a small word doing a big job in the scene, and the kind of casual colloquial term you will hear in beauty tutorials, supermarket aisles, and everyday conversation across the Arab world.
