The most widely heard variety of Portuguese
Brazilian Portuguese (Português Brasileiro)
Real Brazilian Portuguese from São Paulo, Rio, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and beyond: by far the most heard variety of Portuguese online and in global media.
Brazilian Portuguese is what most learners encounter first, and for good reason: there are about 200 million native speakers in Brazil, and Brazilian creators dominate Portuguese-language content online. The variety is famously melodic, with open vowels that stay clearly pronounced, a relaxed rhythm, and intonation that often rises across a sentence in ways European Portuguese does not. You will hear "você" as the default second-person pronoun rather than European "tu", gerund constructions like "estou falando" instead of European "estou a falar", and vocabulary differences across the board: "ônibus" not "autocarro", "celular" not "telemóvel", "trem" not "comboio", "banheiro" not "casa de banho". On this page you hear real Brazilian Portuguese in unscripted short-form video: stories, reactions, humor, and everyday life. Different regions sound different too: a Carioca from Rio sounds different from a Paulistano from São Paulo, who sounds different again from a speaker from Salvador or Recife. That regional variety is part of what makes Brazilian Portuguese so worth listening to in volume.
