European Portuguese (Português Europeu)

European Portuguese is what people speak in Portugal, and for learners coming from Brazilian Portuguese it can sound like a different language on first contact. The biggest change is the way unstressed vowels reduce: short e and o often shrink toward near-silence, giving European Portuguese a consonant-heavy sound that many learners describe as "Slavic" the first time they hear it. The rhythm is faster and more clipped, intonation falls where Brazilian rises, and small grammar choices differ too: "estar a + infinitive" replaces the Brazilian gerund, so "estou a falar" instead of "estou falando", and "tu" is the default informal pronoun rather than "você". Vocabulary diverges meaningfully: "autocarro", "telemóvel", "casa de banho", "comboio" where Brazilians use "ônibus", "celular", "banheiro", "trem".
