What does “春游” mean in Chinese?

This story happens on a 春游 — the spring outing generations of Chinese schoolkids know by heart: a chartered bus, packed snacks, a day out in the countryside. 春 is spring and 游 is to roam — the same 游 as 旅游 (travel) and 游客 (tourist). Here the outing backfires sweetly: one boy steps off the bus, looks around, and bursts into tears — 这是我家, “this is my home.”

The autumn edition is 秋游, and both are minor institutions — permission slips, matching hats, and all. 游 rewards a second look too: it also means “to swim” (游泳), so one character covers both ways of drifting through the world. The boy’s last line lands hardest: the flowers by the road are ones he planted with his grandfather.
