How do you use “连...都” (lián...dōu) in Chinese?

连…都 (lián…dōu) is Mandarin’s way of saying “not even.” The structure 连 + [minimum thing] + 都 + [negative verb] signals that even the most basic thing didn’t happen. 连脸都没洗 means “I didn’t even wash my face” — implying maximum laziness. The more extreme the embedded example, the stronger the emphasis. This pattern is one of the most natural ways Chinese speakers convey surprise, complaint, or self-deprecating humour.

The clip teaches the pattern directly from a real situation: the speaker stayed home all day and didn’t wash her face — but she insists she did brush her teeth: 我不可能连牙都没有刷就吃饭 (“there’s no way I’d eat without even brushing my teeth”). She explains: 连 here means 甚至都 (shènzhì dōu, “even”), with the feeling of 连最基本的都没有做 (“not even doing the most basic thing”). Other examples from the clip: 连饭都没吃 (“didn’t even eat”), 连门都没出 (“didn’t even go outside”). The pattern also works in the positive: 连小孩都知道 (“even a child knows”).
