Roel ruimt dixi-toiletten op na Koningsdag
A2 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Curated for beginners
What is a Dutch “dixi”?
A dixi is the Dutch generic name for a portable toilet, borrowed from the Dixi brand operated by Toi Toi & Dixi (the European market leader). Dutch festival season runs on dixi rentals: Koningsdag, Pinkpop, Lowlands, De Vierdaagse, Sail Amsterdam, neighborhood braderieën, and the country’s many kermissen all need temporary sanitation. Toi Toi and Dixi dominate the market so completely that dixi has become the generic term, the way Tesa in German covers all sticky tape. Cleanup the day after Koningsdag is a Dutch municipal-services ritual.
In this clip, a Dutch Roel hauls dixi-toiletten the morning after Koningsdag: “Wat verdomme... Kijk, hier doen we het voor.”
