What does “règle” mean in French?
Une règle is the plastic ruler in a pencil case. Une règle is also a rule — a law, a grammar point, a rule of a game. One word, both jobs, and the link is straightforward: the ruler is what keeps a line straight, the rule is what keeps behaviour straight. Context does the sorting, and the company the word keeps settles it: une règle de grammaire versus une règle de 30 cm.
The family is large. Régler is to adjust or settle, including settling a bill — régler l’addition. Un règlement is a set of regulations, en règle générale means “as a general rule”, and je suis en règle means “my papers are in order”.
