What does “galère” mean in French?

Call something une galère and you mean it was a nightmare to get through: c’était la galère pour trouver une place. The word is the old oared warship — and les galères was a sentence, years spent rowing one, which is where the misery attached itself. Nothing of the ship is left in everyday use: it now covers admin, traffic, moving flat, anything that grinds.

It has produced a verb that learners hear constantly: galérer, to struggle or have a rough time of it — j’ai galéré toute la journée. Both are informal, and both are used lightly, so quelle galère ! over a missing form is closer to “what a pain” than to any real complaint about suffering.
