💡 Did you know?

What does “sur place ou à emporter” mean?

sur place ou à emporter
French counter question
“eating in or taking away?” — the question every French takeaway asks

Order at a bakery, a kebab shop or a fast-food counter in France and you will be asked sur place ou à emporter ? Sur place — literally “on the spot” — means you are eating there. À emporter means you are taking it with you. Answering takes two words and no verb: sur place, merci, or à emporter, s’il vous plaît.

The joke in this sketch is a counter worker who offers the same option twice — vous mangez ici ou sur place ? — which only lands if you know how the real question goes. The verb underneath is worth keeping straight from its neighbour: emporter is to carry away from here, apporter is to bring towards here. Un plat à emporter is a takeaway dish.
