What does “ansatzweise” mean in German?
A baking judge looks at three failed dishes and says none of them is “ansatzweise” like he pictured it. On its own, “ansatzweise” means “even slightly” or “a little bit.” But drop a “not” in front — as the judge does — and it flips into a put-down: not even a tiny bit right. When you hear it after a negative, the speaker means the result is nowhere close to good enough.
Spoken line: “keins der 3 Exemplare ist ansatzweise von der Optik so, wie ich mir das vorgestellt habe” — “none of the 3 pieces looks even slightly the way I imagined it.” “ansatzweise” on its own means “even a little” or “in the beginning stages.” It often shows up with a “not” for a sharp judgement. Plain examples: - “Das ist nicht ansatzweise genug.” — “That isn’t even close to enough.” - “Ich verstehe das ansatzweise.” — “I understand it a little bit / in part.” - “Sie war nicht ansatzweise nervös.” — “She wasn’t the least bit nervous.” Usage note: with a “not” (“nicht”) in front, it usually means “not even slightly.” Without the “not,” it can mean “partly” or “starting to.”
