💡 Did you know?

What does “sehr mitgenommen” mean in German?

sehr mitgenommen
When something shakes you up inside
“It really got to me” — left you shaken or drained inside.

The actor describes the saddest scene he ever filmed: doctors carry out his TV son’s organs in cases, and his character breaks down. He then says it hit him for real too: “Das hat mich auch als Schauspieler sehr mitgenommen.” Literally, mitnehmen means to take along — but here it means the experience shook him and stayed with him. He is a father himself, so the scene got to him as a person, not only as an actor.

Spoken in the clip: “Das hat mich auch als Schauspieler sehr mitgenommen.” — “That really got to me, even as an actor.” Use it when something sad or stressful drains you and stays in your head: - “Die Beerdigung hat mich sehr mitgenommen.” — “The funeral really got to me.” - “Der Anruf hat sie ziemlich mitgenommen.” — “The call shook her up quite a bit.” - “Nach der langen Woche bin ich richtig mitgenommen.” — “After the long week I feel completely worn out.” Notes: hat … mitgenommen wraps around the sentence, with mitgenommen at the end. sehr (“very”) makes it stronger. On its own, the same verb can simply mean “to take something along,” so the emotional meaning comes from the context.
