What does “patent” mean as slang in Hungarian?

“A haja nagyon patent lett” — “her hair turned out really patent” — uses patent the way casual Hungarian loves to: as a thumbs-up adjective meaning “excellent, flawless, just right.” It is the same word as the noun patent (a snap fastener, or a legal patent), repurposed colloquially: something that snaps neatly into place is, well, patent. Handy because it stays the same whatever you praise — a haircut, a plan, an outfit.

Don’t confuse the senses: patent the noun is a press-stud snap (on a jacket) or a patent in the invention sense; patent the colloquial adjective means “ace, top-notch.” Same-register neighbours a learner can swap in: király (literally “king,” = awesome), zsír (“fat,” = cool), and tök jó (“totally good”).
