What does “összefut a nyál a szájában” mean?

When Hungarians want to say something looks delicious, they describe the reflex: összefut a nyál a szájában — “the saliva runs together in his mouth.” Összefut is össze- (“together”) plus fut (“to run”). Said of food it is entirely ordinary and appetising, and dictionaries record a figurative sense too: wanting something badly.

The possessive moves with the speaker — összefut a nyál a számban (“in my mouth”), a szájadban (“in yours”). Two more idioms do similar work in this clip: meggyűlt a bajom vele, “I ran into trouble with it,” said of a mushroom pasta that went wrong, and the self-mocking konyhatündér, “kitchen fairy,” for someone who is — or in this case very much isn’t — a natural at the stove.
