What does “fora da curva” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

Call someone fora da curva in Brazil and you are paying a serious compliment: they are exceptional, in a class of their own. The image behind it is a statistician’s bell curve, where almost everything clusters under the hump. To be fora da curva is to sit outside it — the ponto fora da curva, which is exactly how Portuguese renders the English term “outlier.”

In statistics the phrase is neutral: an outlier can be a data-entry error as easily as a genius. In everyday Brazilian speech it usually leans admiring — um talento fora da curva, um ano fora da curva — though context can still push it towards “abnormal.” The curve itself is named for Gauss, so curva de Gauss and curva normal both name the same bell shape.
