Recomendação do filme brasileiro Cidade de Deus
A2 Portuguese listening practice · Brazilian Portuguese · Curated for beginners
What does “safra” mean in Portuguese?
Safra is the harvest: a safra de café is the coffee crop, and wine from a good year is uma boa safra, “a good vintage.” Brazilians stretch the word to any new batch of people or work that appears at the same time. A nova safra de filmes brasileiros is “the latest crop of Brazilian films,” and a club can boast about a safra de jogadores from its youth team.
English does the same with “crop” and “vintage,” so the image transfers easily. In the clip, after naming Cidade de Deus, the speaker adds Ainda Estou Aqui, pela recente safra, “from the recent crop,” meaning one of the Brazilian films of the last couple of years. The opposite of safra in farming talk is entressafra, the gap between two harvests, also used for a quiet spell between big releases or big signings.
