What does “খসখস” mean in Bengali?

খসখস (khoshkhosh)
Bengali sound-word pattern
the dry rustle of leaves — one of Bengali’s doubled sound-words

খসখস is the dry rustle of leaves, and it shows how Bengali builds noise straight into vocabulary: double a syllable and the word becomes the sound. The same clip supplies ধুপধুপ, the thudding of a frightened heart. Once the pattern is audible, a whole class of Bengali words stops needing translation at all.

These are ধ্বন্যাত্মক শব্দ, “sound-born words,” and Bengali carries an unusually large stock: টাপুরটুপুর (the light patter of rain), ঝিরঝির (a fine drizzle, or a soft breeze), গমগম (a hall booming with noise). Rabindranath leaned on them heavily, which is why they read as literary and childlike at the same time. On a dark forest path they do the work of a horror soundtrack.
