What does “jaki pan, taki pies” mean?

Jaki pan, taki pies — “like the master, so the dog” — runs on Polish’s favorite proverb mold: jaki X, taki Y, “as X is, so is Y.” It’s the engine behind jaki ojciec, taki syn (“like father, like son”) and jaka praca, taka płaca (“as the work, so the pay”). In this dog-and-newspaper joke it’s the punchline — the misbehaving dog says everything about the owner.

The pattern agrees in gender, which is why it flexes: jaki pan, taki pies (masculine), jaka praca, taka płaca (feminine). The joke even improvises a comeback in the same mold — the insulted owner fires back that the man matches his newspaper. Once you can hear the jaki…, taki… frame, you can coin your own Polish proverbs on the spot, and Poles love when learners do.
