💡 Did you know?

What does “em dia” mean in Portuguese?

em dia
Portuguese everyday idiom
“up to date” — caught up, nothing outstanding

Em dia means “up to date,” in the specific sense of having nothing pending: manter a vacinação em dia (keep your vaccinations current), estou em dia com as contas (my bills are all paid), colocar a leitura em dia (catch up on reading). Note the missing article — never em o dia — and the verbs it keeps company with: estar em dia, manter em dia, colocar or pôr em dia.

The warmest use is social: pôr o papo em dia is to catch up with someone over a long overdue conversation, literally “put the chat up to date.” Do not confuse it with em um dia (“in one day”) or no dia (“on the day”). The clip opens its winter health advice with the standard collocation: mantenha a vacinação em dia.
