💡 Did you know?

What does “convenhamos” mean in Portuguese?

convenhamos
Portuguese discourse marker
“let’s be honest,” “come on, admit it” — a one-word concession

Convenhamos is how a Portuguese speaker says “let’s be honest” or “come on, admit it” before conceding a point. It is the nós form of convir, “to agree” or “to be advisable,” pressed into service as a single-word invitation to agree with what follows: mas convenhamos, isso não é exercício — “but let’s be honest, that isn’t exercise.”

Convir is vir (“to come”) with a prefix, so it conjugates like it: convém (“it’s advisable”), convinha, convenha. You will meet it giving advice — convém marcar consulta — and extracting agreement: tens de convir que…, “you have to admit that…”. In the clip it sets up the reality check: mas convenhamos, ações cotidianas como carregar compras pra dentro de casa podem fazer suar, mas não demora nem 10 minutos.
