Abolengo is inherited lineage, usually the distinguished kind: de abolengo marks an old, well-bred family with a pedigree to show. It is built on abuelo (“grandfather”), the line that comes down from your forebears. A family de rancio abolengo is one of long-standing, slightly faded nobility; the word carries a whiff of old money and inherited status that plain familia or origen never does.
