What does “vloeiend” mean in Dutch?
When you speak a language smoothly, Dutch says you speak it vloeiend — fluently. The word comes from vloeien, “to flow,” so speaking vloeiend is literally speaking in a way that flows. English hides the same picture: “fluent” comes from Latin fluere, also “to flow.” Two languages, one image — words running smoothly like water.
The clip’s sentence is “Ze spreekt vloeiend Nederlands” — she speaks Dutch fluently. Vloeien (to flow) gives a small family of water words: vloeistof (a liquid, lit. “flow-stuff”), de vloed (the flood or incoming tide, as in eb en vloed, ebb and flow), and overvloed (abundance, an “overflow”). Vloeiend works as both adjective and adverb: vloeiend Engels (fluent English), zij leest vloeiend (she reads fluently).
