What does “slaap lekker” mean in Dutch?
Dutch says goodnight with slaap lekker — “sleep well.” The surprise is lekker: most learners meet it as “tasty” (lekker eten, tasty food), but here it means “nicely” or “pleasantly.” Dutch reaches for lekker for any cosy, good feeling, not just food. So slaap lekker wishes you a nice, comfortable sleep — nothing to do with taste at all.
The daily-routine song closes the day with “Slaap lekker. Mijn dag is klaar.” — Sleep well. My day is done. Once you notice lekker beyond food, it’s everywhere: lekker weer (lovely weather), lekker warm (nice and warm), lekker rustig (nice and quiet), zit je lekker? (are you comfy?). It can even shade into a relaxed “happily / just because”: ik blijf lekker thuis (I’m just staying home, and glad of it). For goodnight you’ll also hear welterusten (a more formal “sleep well”), but slaap lekker is the warm, everyday version.
