💡 Did you know?

What does “ما كيرجعوش” mean in Moroccan Arabic?

كي-…-ش (ki-…-sh)
Moroccan Darija verb wrap
the two-sided Darija frame that turns a present-tense verb into a negative: كيرجع (he comes back) → ما كيرجعوش (they don’t come back)

Moroccan Darija wraps a verb in two layers at once to make it negative. The present-tense marker كي- (ki-) clips onto the front of the verb, and the negation particle (-sh) snaps onto the back — with ما (ma) anchoring the whole thing at the start. So كيرجع (kirjaʿ, “he comes back”) becomes ما كيرجعوش (ma kirjaʿush, “they don’t come back”). This sandwich structure is invisible in Modern Standard Arabic but essential in every Moroccan conversation.

The ما…-ش circumfix is borrowed from Amazigh (Berber), Morocco’s indigenous language — one of the clearest signs of how Darija diverged from Classical Arabic. It wraps not just the verb root but the entire conjugated form, including the كي- prefix: ma + ki-verb-sh. In the clip, a comedian contrasts كيمشي ولكن كيرجع (he leaves but comes back) with مشات وما جعاتش (it went and didn’t come back) to deliver the punchline of the title: a friend returns, money never does.
